Mint Green, a white pickguard and a maple fingerboard with black dots: the Ray4 in this finish has a bright, sixties look that’s hard to walk past. Underneath the pastel paint it’s all StingRay, with the big oval pickguard, the 3+1 headstock and a single humbucker by the bridge, and a bass that’s as happy driving a surf or garage set as it is laying down a pop groove.

The light maple fingerboard and black dot markers keep the whole bass bright and airy, and the white pickguard and chrome control plate sit neatly against the Mint Green. It’s a finish that suits a stage under coloured lights, a rehearsal-room wall or a stand beside the sofa, and the StingRay shape gives it plenty of presence wherever it lands.

A ceramic humbucker feeds a 9V 2-band active preamp, with volume, treble and bass on the chrome plate by your picking hand. Roll the treble back for a warm, round part under a vocal, or push it for a bright, punchy edge when you dig in with a pick or start slapping.

A slim neck and a full 34″ scale
The hard maple neck bolts on with six screws and carries a maple fingerboard with 21 medium frets. A 38mm nut keeps it slim down at the lower frets, where most bass lines live, and the heavy-duty bridge is fully adjustable, so action and intonation can be set to suit the way you play.
